What Does Collagen Do for the Body?

What’s the largest organ in the human body? The skin. That’s right, the skin is actually an organ, and the health of that organ can tell you a lot about your overall health. That’s why it’s so important to support skin health with vital nutrients it needs to thrive. But what nutrients are the most important? One stands out: collagen.

What Does Collagen Do for the Body?

Collagen is a protein that is a central structural component of skin and other connective tissues throughout the body that supports elasticity.1 About 80 to 90 percent of the collagen in the skin is Type 1 Collagen, which supports both structure and strength but with age, the skin becomes thinner because collagen production declines.2

A 2019 review of 11 different studies found that taking a collagen supplement helped support skin elasticity, hydration, and thickness.3 This is consistent with a 2021 randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial that found that marine collagen helped support skin elasticity, hydration, and radiance compared to placebo.4

Because bones also contain large amounts of collagen, collagen supplements can also help support joints. A 2019 analysis of several different studies found that taking collagen orally helped support joint mobility.5

A Powerful Collagen

It’s important to understand that not all forms of collagen are equally beneficial for skin. For general wellness and glowing skin, choose marine collagen.

Marine Collagen contains Type l and lll collagen – the types mainly associated with a more youthful appearance. We’ve also added vitamin C, essential to the synthesis of collagen, and pycnogenol for added support.*
