Fiber Power: How Psyllium Husk Keeps Your Gut in Check

Fiber Power: How Psyllium Husk Keeps Your Gut in Check

At a glance, digestion is pretty simple. There’s a long tube through your body that processes the foods you eat. What can go wrong?

Well, if that process doesn’t go smoothly and things get stuck in that tube, the ramifications are anything but simple. Bloating, constipation, fatigue… the list goes on.

The key with digestion is to keep things running smoothly from start to finish… especially the finish! Psyllium husk is a traditional way to help support that key part of your body’s digestion.* Here’s how.

Psyllium Seed Husk Helps Support Regularity

Psyllium seed husk is a form of soluble fiber found in some foods and dietary supplements. One key way psyllium seed husk supports digestion is by directly supporting regularity.

While psyllium husk is a traditional remedy native to India, its ability to support regularity has been supported by modern research. In a 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial, psyllium seed husk increased water in the stool in people who were struggling with regularity.1 The gut microbiome of the people taking the psyllium was also influenced, which led to additional digestion support.

A 2021 study looking at the composition of the gut microbiome in women having difficulty with regularity also found the same thing: that a psyllium husk supplement not only supported the gut microbiome, but also supported regularity compared to women who took a placebo.2

Psyllium’s power to aid digestion makes it a “functional fiber.”3 In fact, psyllium is the only fiber for regularity recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology.

You can find psyllium husk in some high-fiber cereals and bakery products like rice cakes and instant noodles. But let’s be real—it can be difficult to get enough psyllium from food alone.

Choosing a Psyllium Seed Husk Supplement

Psyllium seed supplements come in all shapes and sizes. Many just take it as a capsule, but we’ve taken it a step further by pairing it with an essential mineral powerhouse, magnesium, in our Cleanout Magnesium Powder drink mix. Magnesium is involved in more than 300 bodily processes and supports strong bones and muscles, nerve function, and more, so it made sense to blend with psyllium husk. After all, digestive regularity is also key part of whole-body wellness.4

Adding psyllium husk into your daily wellness routine is an easy and effective way to support digestion, promote regularity, and nurture your overall gut health for the long run.*
